Frequently Asked Questions
What is the AKC?
The American Kennel Club is the oldest purebred dog registry in the US. The top 10 breeds (Labrador retriever, Rottweiler, German shepherd, Golden Retriever, Poodle, Beagle, Dachshund, Cocker Spaniel, Yorkshire terrier, and Pomeranian) accounted for more than 560 thousand of the total individual registrations.
Most people who breed purebred dogs claim some affiliation with a registry as a seal of quality for their puppies.
What does Registration from AKC mean?
AKC registration works like this: When puppies are whelped, the breeder registers the litter; AKC sends a blue slip for each puppy in the litter; the breeder signs the puppy over to the buyer, who then registers the individual puppy in his name and is sent a registration certificate.
When should I take my puppy home?
Most breeders release their pups between six and eight weeks. Here are some important things to look for.
- Make sure the pups have been weaned.
- Make sure the pups have had their first shots for at least three days to make sure they have no negative reactions to the shots.
- The pups should have solid or at least firm stools.
What is Limited Registration?
Limited Registration is an AKC registered Labrador that cannot have a litter registered with AKC.
What is Full Registration?
Full Registration can have a litter registered with AKC. You only need this if you are showing dogs or are willing to certify the hips and eyes before you have a litter.
